LONEWOLF (aka Zac Matias) is a multidisciplinary creative, video director, and curator. A DIY videographer from Indiana, he began his career working with local artists across the Midwest. His creative editing and distinct collage aesthetic eventually led him to working alongside artists like A$AP Ferg, Lil Yachty, MadeinTYO, and Brent Faiyaz.
His video work includes editing for Drake, French Montana, and Lil Uzi Vert‘s AWGE DVD (which racked up more than 2 million views) along with creating the backdrop for Future’s performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Read on for what LONEWOLF has to say about this collaboration.
What’s exciting to you about artists who are at this emerging stage in their career, and what persuades you to feature an artist on your playlist?
LONEWOLF: Being able to help showcase and put these artists out there even more, and helping them break through. Just artists in general and being able to work with them — especially if you really like the artist, if you get to make a video or artwork and put them on a playlist, it’s a great moment.
What do you hope the artist gets out of being selected for your playlist? Why would you suggest that an artist take advantage of an opportunity like this?
L: I thought it’d be a cool and different from me just posting videos and artwork all the time. It’s a new medium, a new format to be able to work with these artists.
Some bigger artists get on playlists all the time, but for a lot of these artists, it’s their first time getting put on a playlist. I know it’s not anything huge; Lonewolf isn’t, like, super big. But even just having one of their songs on a playlist — it’s a good look.
The [LONEWOLF x Level] playlist has every genre; I chose artists that are in the indie world, hip-hop, experimental, all different types. It’s a melting pot of different artists, and they’ll probably find different artists that they rock with just from going on the playlist and seeing who else is on it. It’s just good for everybody.
How do you approach putting together a playlist?
L: I know a lot of these artists. It’s all curated from these conversations with them, a collaborative thing between me and them liking a song.
Who are you currently listening to?
L: I’ve been listening to Dev Hynes, Blood Orange. His last project — I’ve just had in rotation. He’s just one of those artists I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Pi’erre Bourne: he’s more so known as a producer, but his album is so beautiful, man. And just for him, to be a producer trying to break out as an artist — it’s like the steps Kanye was taking.
